1977 John Powers Charter Member Milwaukee.gifThroughout John's career, he has contributed significantly to the development and expansion of the sport of wrestling. His interest in wrestling actually made him a catalyst in the evolution of amateur wrestling in Wisconsin.

In 1936, to provide more competition for individuals participating in this sport, Mr. Powers met with the coaches from West Allis, West Milwaukee and Marquette. Together they drew up rules and started wrestling in that area. The extension of his intramural program was a key step in expanding wrestling to the sophisticated and excellent program in operation today.

While in overall record of his coaching record does not exist at this time, it is known that in 1936, his team had 11 wins and in 1940, 1941 and 1942 his teams won the State Championship. From 1941-43 his teams were undefeated in dual meets. After retiring in 1944, he continued to offer valuable encouragement, support and advice to teams and individuals in the Milwaukee area.
